The Code of Ethics of the Sign Language interpreter refers to the deontology of this profession, legal aspects as well as guidelines for running the interpretation activity. Among the main principles that lay at the core of the Code of Ethics, we mention: respecting the rights of Deaf people and abiding by the law regarding people with disabilities and the law regulating the interpreting profession; respecting the languages one works with, the people involved in the interpretation process, the profession itself as well as one’s colleagues.
More precisely, the principle of confidentiality aims to protect the people involved in the interpreting process by nondisclosure of the information the interpreter had access to within such a context. The principle of impartiality refers to the fact that the interpreter must treat all the people involved impartially, as he/she is not the representative or supporter of one of the parties. The principle of faithfulness refers to the interpreter being faithful to the information processed during interpretation. The interpreter shall translate the message completely, correctly, exactly and without eliminating or adding information. Furthermore, the interpreter must be able to make self-assessments and be able to efficiently work with the feedback received in order to continually improve his interpreting kills.
